September 2005 News

At the September meeting a 30-year Lions membership badge was presented to Lion Adam Gardner.

Funds for charities were raised by the Club by organising the car parking at Bourton-on-the-Water, having a stall in the market square at Stow-on-the-Wold and holding a very successful jumble sale in Northleach on October 1st.

Discussion took place regarding holding a Summer Ball next year. It was agreed to proceed with planning under the chairmanship of Lion Mike Pezet with a proposed date in July 2006.

An open evening was held at the Wheatsheaf on 26th September for any member of the public who was interested in knowing more about lionism to come to learn and ask questions with a view to considering membership

Socially, the outing to Stanway House and its fountain was very popular and in October a skittles evening at Guiting Power is planned.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina attracted, as usual,  immediate and generous reponses from Lions International.

Grants were made of $270,000 for short-term relief on providing shelters and for clothing, food, bedding, etc. Local Lions Clubs are very much involved in the assistance needed.

The Lions-Tacade Partnership has been operating for many years through schools to make students more aware of Life Skills on issues such as alcohol, drugs and smoking. It is now extending its role to develop health education for blind and partially sighted children and young people. Tacade identifies teaching and learning materials that are essential to satisfying the curriculum. Lions fund the development and production of those materials.

The Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month for its business meeting. The venue is the Wheatsheaf Inn at Northleach starting at 8pm and all interested people are welcome to attend.  The next meeting is on October 11th.
