Meeting at The
Wheatsheaf Inn,
|
January 2005 News In September we welcomed Edward Timms as a new member, we look forward to sharing many fruitful fund raising events and enjoyable social evenings with him and his wife Annette. Over £1400 was raised by our Christmas collections outside supermarkets which was slightly up on last years’ total. Donations were approved to The Family Haven, a charity that runs homes for vulnerable families in Gloucester, to the Special Olympics, organised by Lions, to be held in Glasgow in the summer and to LIBRA, the Lions Blood Research Appeal. In addition, £1000, arising from our special collection outside Waitrose in November, was sent to the Cirencester Hospital Scanner Appeal. The tsunami disaster in South Asia has prompted a tremendous outpouring of support from Lions around the world and Lions are working night and day to bring life-saving supplies to victims. The Lions Clubs International Foundation has awarded approx £260,000 in grants to Lions in the affected countries. This is made up of £125,000 for immediate needs and £135,000 for longer-term relief. Also Lions from nearby unaffected nations have sent volunteer workers to help, e.g. Lions from Taiwan have sent a medical team to Sri Lanka. Lions from Sweden have sent £70,000 and Lions from Korea £110,000. On a local level, this club sent an immediate emergency donation to the disaster fund, which was approved retrospectively at the January meeting. This worldwide response by lions emphasises the importance of being a member of such an international organisation. On the social front members had a successful drinks party in the week before Christmas and are having a dinner with wives and friends later in January. A full schedule of social events have been arranged for the next six months including a dinner cruise on the river at Tewkesbury. The Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month for its business meeting. The venue is the Wheatsheaf in Northleach starting at 8pm and all interested people are welcome to attend. |
