April 2005 News

At the April meeting of the Club members agreed to make donations to Hospice Care Kenya, a Gloucestershire-based  organisation which runs several hospices in East Africa, “Sleeping Bag” project which supports homeless and street children in the Third World, the Leonard Cheshire Homes, the Bob Cook Memorial Games for the Disabled and a Lions International Appeal for a mini-bus in Malawi to be managed by the local Lions Club.

A further donation was approved to WaterAid, which is a charity to provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene education to the Third World.  The charity provides communities with the materials and expertise to install the necessary equipment and its ongoing maintenance. Over 1 billion people worldwide have inadequate clean water and sanitation.

It was also agreed to donate the profit from the Jazz concert held in April to Winston’s Wish.  This is a charity based in Cheltenham which helps bereaved children and young people rebuild their lives after a family death.

A new project of Lions International is with Dentaid. This charity is aimed at helping to fight dental problems in developing countries. Clubs have sponsored dental surgeries in 46 countries so far and it is hoped that if dentists in the UK have redundant equipment, it can be productively utilised in these countries.

The Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month for its business meeting. The venue is the Wheatsheaf in Northleach starting at 8pm and all interested people are welcome to attend. The next meeting is on the 10th May.
